Tall Ships Invade Solomons Island
By Michelle Doell

The majestic tall ships from your history books have sailed into Solomons Island just like they did back in 1814 during the War of 1812. The tall ships will be docked at local ports around the island.

The Kalmar Nyckel with its bright blue hull was the first to arrive. It will be docked at Waterman’s Wharf. The Pride of Baltimore II will be docked at Solomons Island Yacht Club. The Sultana will be docked at Zahniser’s Yachting Center. The majestic ships are open for people to come aboard and take a look.

They will all depart on Sunday for Jefferson Patterson Park for a reenactment of the largest naval engagement in Maryland’s history. The battle was fought on both land and water. Neither side won but the British settled for blockading the US Forces in the creek. The British went on to go up the Pataxuent River to Lower Marlboro where the town was raided and occupied. By June 26th reinforcements had arrived and U.S Commodore Joshua Barney was able to break out of the blockade.
The reenactment will take place at 2pm. While it’s the main event, there are many different events at the park this weekend. There will be period dance lessons, crafts of the period, blacksmith demonstrations and children’s games from the time.  Come out and step back into history.
